The cost of 14 gallons of gas is $19.46

a. How much gas could you buy with $8.70? use equivalent ratios to solve.

b. How much would it cost to buy 9.5 gallons? use equivalent ratios to solve.

a) 14:19.46 \$ = x :8.70 \$ \\ \\ x=(14*8.70)/(19.46)= (121.8)/(19.46) \\ \\ \boxed{x=6.258} \\ \\ b)14:19.46 \$= 9.5:x \\ \\ x=(19.46*9.5)/(14)= (184.87)/(14) \\ \\ \boxed{x=13.205}

A. First develop your ratio:

(x)/(14) = (8.70)/(19.46)
where
x is the amount of gas needed.

Divide the amount charged for
x amount of gas by 19.46, then multiply that amount by 14 to get the amount of gas bought:
(6.26)/(14) = (8.70)/(19.46)

B. Again, develop your ratio:

(9.5)/(14) = (x)/(19.46)
and use the same procedure.

Divide 9.5 by 14, then multiply your answer by 19.46 to get:

(9.5)/(14) = (13.21)/(19.46)
