Even simpler: Divide both sides by 17: X+5 = 0 X = -5

it is a simple linear equation with one unknown, we can solve it:
17(x + 5) = 0
17x + 17*5 = 0
17x + 85 = 0
17x = -85
x = -85/17
x = -5
