in that sentence, the word that became an adverb used to modify the verb is : C. sadly an adverb is an adjective that we put before a verb that change the whole meaning or intonation of that verb. In that general, spoke mean giving out words from your mouth. After adding 'sadly' , now we got the picture about the emotion of the person who spoke
