3 because 8 divided by 8, equals 1 and then x by 5 equals 5, so 8 - 5 (the amount eaten) = 3

Answer: He will put
(3)/(8) part of the total pie.

Explanation:

Let he has friends = x

Total pieces of the pie = 8

Thus, the part of pie he gave to his friends =
(x)/(8)

The pie left after distribution
=1 - (x)/(8)=(8-x)/(8)

But, according to the question,

Remaining part =
(5)/(8)

\implies (8-x)/(8)=(5)/(8)

\implies 64 - 8x = 40

\implies -8x = -24

\implies x = 3

Hence, the number of friends = 3

⇒ The total parts he gave to his friends =
(3)/(8)
