A dog barking at a stranger approaching their home is competition. A dog is territorial and it is programmed in them from way back in their wolf-like years before being domesticated to protect what's theirs or they didn't survive. When a dog barks at a stranger he is warning that 'intruder' that they'll have a fight on their hands if they try anything.
