Why was the invention of barbed wire in 1874 so important to farmers

It was less expensive than wooden fences and allowed ranchers to contain their livestock, instead of free-range grazing. It was also easier to transport, helping settlers to claim land.

so they could fence in their cattle and other animals and to keep pests out of crops
