Answer:

When WWI started all the men that worked in the factorys left to go to war. This caused tons of jobs to be vacated. The African Americans began leaving the South to pursue better economic oppoutunities and in hopes of escaping Southern racism. This mass movement of African Americans from the predominantly rural South to northern cities continued for several decades.This became know as the 'Great Migration'.
