The equation would be something like
20 - 2/3x = 12
so times it by 3 to get rid of the demoninator
60 - 2x = 36
rearrange
-2x = 36 - 60
solve
-2x = -24
so
x = 12

The number is 12, if you split it into 3 parts you get 4 so 2/3 of it would be 8. then you just take 20 ans subtract 8 to get 12.
