Answer is: trade.
Portuguese expansion began in the fifteenth century. At the 19th century, Portugal controlled six locations in Africa. Portuguese hold in Africa was weak. They used trans-Saharan trade routes between Songhay and the North African for gold trading, also they trade guns for slaves.
