Movies and video games

Step 1 - identifying the variables we want to find

Let's say that:

M: "cost of each movie"

V: "cost of each video game"

We want to find the value of M and V.

Step 2 - writing the mathematical expressions

First expression:

If Eric rented 3 movies, then, the cost for all the movies will be

3 · M = 3M

and for 5 video games, the cost of all the video games will be

5 · V = 5V

Since the total cost for 3 movies and 5 video games is 30 dollars, then

3M + 5V = $30

Second expression:

In a similar way, we have that the cost of 6 movies and 2 video games is

6M + 2V

Since it is 18 dollars, then

6M + 2V = $18

Then, we have the equations:

3M + 5V = $30

6M +
