What does it mean when two sets of chromosomes are homologous?

It means that two chromosomes have the same genes, or variations fo the same genes at the same loci on the chromosomes. Variation of the same gene is what makes up alleles. Homologous chromosomes are similar in size and structure. In diploid organisms, each chromosome in the pair is derived from each parent.
