DDT (DiChlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) has popular been used as a pesticide since the 19th century used especially during World War I to control typhus and malaria vectors. The chemical had application as a pesticide both in homesteads and in agriculture. However, it has been banned in the USA due to claims of its carcigonecity and its negative environmental impact. DDT has been shown to harm most arthropods indiscriminately.
