Slope of a linear function

Since the slope of a line, m, represents its inclination, it is given by the following equation:

\begin{gathered} m=(\Delta y)/(\Delta x) \\ =(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1) \end{gathered}

We select any two lines of the table

In this case we are going to select the first, x₁ = -2 and y₁ = 10,

and the second line, x₂ = 0 and y₂ = 4

Replacing in the equation of the slope:

\begin{gathered} m=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1) \\ =(4-10)/(0-(-2)) \\ =(-6)/(2)=-3 \\ m=-3 \end{gathered}

Answer: D. -3
