The practical use of electricity played a much larger role in the second industrial revolution than in the first. Electrification, or the ability to harness and then utilize electricity in a practical every day method began in 1881 with the invention and use of the incandescent light bulb. This simple invention could be said to have played a leading role in the second industrial revolution.
