Answer:

splitting of the lands between themselves

Step-by-step explanation:

The dispute between Spain and Portugal over the lands in South America was settled with the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas which saw south America divided equally along the Atlantic ocean between Spain and Portugal.

All the lands west of the line was given/controlled by the Spanish while all lands lying to the west of the Cape Verde islands / east of the line was controlled by the Portuguese. this helped to end the dispute between both nations on who owes the lands in South America.

The dispute was settled when they split the line in present-day Brazil, in which Portugal was given the eastern part of Brazil, while Spain got the Western part of South America in ~38 degree parallel (1493) to the 46 degree parallel (1494)

hope this helps
