What role did segregation play in maintaining the racial order of the south ?

Segregation in the South was intended to keep African Americans at a lower status as white Americans. It meant that white Americans and African Americans used different restrooms, ate at different restaurants, etc. Even churches were segregated and kept African Americans in subordination.
