The pancreatic cells act as a self-contained system to secrete insulin in response to changes in ambient blood glucose concentration, in order to maintain glucose homeostasis. Glucose is freely taken up into the cell via GLUT transporters, metabolized to produce ATP, which triggers a cascade of signals within the cell necessary for glucose-induced insulin secretion.
