Electrons are located in discrete packets of energy called quanta. The electronic configuration guides you to the ascending arrangement of this energy levels as shown in the attached picture. The excited atom can only jump to its neighboring adjacent energy levels. Therefore, it can only move to either 5f or 7p orbital.
