Final answer:

Marcus's answer of 9/4 for the product of 7/8 and 1 3/4 is incorrect because when you multiply the fractions, the result is 49/32, not 9/4.

Step-by-step explanation:

Marcus has calculated the product of 7/8 and 1 3/4 as 9/4. To determine whether his answer is correct, one can convert the mixed number to an improper fraction and then multiply the two fractions. 1 3/4 is the same as 7/4 when converted to an improper fraction. Now, multiplying 7/8 by 7/4:

  • Multiply the numerators: 7 × 7 = 49
  • Multiply the denominators: 8 × 4 = 32
  • Combine them to get the product 49/32

Since 49/32 is not equivalent to 9/4, Marcus's answer is incorrect. The correct product of 7/8 and 1 3/4 is 49/32, which can also be simplified or expressed as a mixed number if needed.

estimate......7/8 rounds to 1......1 3/4 rounds to 2.....1 * 2 = 2....and thats rounding up...so the actual answer would be less then 2....and 9/4 = 2 1/4...so 9/4 is more then 2
