The answer is D = 8 . You have to subtract 4d from one side and what you do to one side you must do to the other. Then you end up with 5d-5=35. You would add 5 to both sides and get 5d=40. then you divide 5 into both sides and you would get 8 :D

9d (-4d) - 5 (+5) = 4d (-4d) + 35 (+5)
5d = 40
5d/5 = 40/5
d = 8
