Why was Dwight D. Eisenhower an important general during WWII?

After the war, Eisenhower served as Army Chief of Staff then became president of Columbia University. In 1951–1952, he served as the first Supreme Commander of NATO. His administration provided important aid to help the French fight the Vietnamese Communists in the First Indochina War.
