Answer: Hello there!

Ok, in this case, there are only two probabilities, one where Samantha wins, and one where Samantha losses.

In statistics, when we are loockin to a particullar event, all rhe probabilities should add to 1. In this case, the probability of samantha winning plus the probability of Samantha losing should be equal than one.

then:

3/8 + x = 1

x= 1 - 3/8 = 5/8

and this makes a lot of sense, if there are 3 of 8 scenarios where Samantha wins, then we have other 5 of 8 scenarios where Samantha doesn't win.

Given that the probability of an event happening is P(E), then the probability that the event will not happen is given by 1 - P(E).

Therefore, given that the probability that Samantha will win the gymnastic meet is 3/8, the probability of her losing the gymnastic meet is 1 - 3/8 = 5/8.
