The correct answer is Constantinople was sacked by the crusaders.

The original idea was to retake Jerusalem which was under control of Muslims. The idea was to go through Egypt and invade. However, unforeseen circumstances happened and one thing led to another and so it ended with the crusaders sacking Constantinople.
