a spaceship traveled 9/11 of a light-year from earth to planet x and 1/2 of a light year from planet x to planet x to planet y. Then it traveled 1/2 of a light from planet y back to earth. How many light years did the spaceship travel in all.

In this problem the spaceship made 3 travels, so we have to add the distance to find the total light years so:

\begin{gathered} (9)/(11)+(1)/(2)+(1)/(2)=(18)/(22)+(11)/(22)+(11)/(22)=(40)/(22) \\ (20)/(11) \end{gathered}
