A "satellite state" is a country that is controlled by a stronger country.
Satellite states were evident throughout the Cold War era. After the end of World War II, the Soviet Union and US emerged as global superpowers. The Soviet Union wanted to expand their communist system to other countries. They suceeded in this goal and established several different satellite states like Romania, Bulgaria, etc.
