Read the last few paragraphs of the excerpt from Night. Explain the internal conflict faced by the narrator. As described in the footnote, Wiesel interjects into the narration his later reflection on this first night at Auschwitz. Why is the repetition of the phrase “Never shall I forget” important? Why do you think it imperative to remember the Holocaust today?

The phrase "Never shall I forget" is important because it shows how significant the Holocaust was.  It is imperative to remember the Holocaust today so that history will not repeat itself and we can respect those that died.

In "Night", Elie Wiesel faces an internal conflict: Losing the faith whilst witnessing tragic and disgraceful events.

The view of dead children and their corpses being consumed by fire also consumed the author's faith in God and his desire to live.

The repetition of the phrase "Never shall I forget" is important, since it emphasizes the everlasting effect the horrors of Auschwitz had on the author.

It is imperative to remember the Holocaust today because it is a historic event during which millions of innocent people suffered and died. We, as a civilization, must learn from History in order to evolve and avoid making the same mistakes.
