According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, 3146 persons are known to be on Death Row as of 10/1/2012. This consists of an almost equal percentage of white and black persons (43%-42%, respectively), and a 49-1 ratio of males to females. 35 of the 53 US legal jurisdictions have statutes in place allowing for the death of inmates, while the other 18 have made such sentences illegal.
