For the given figure:

The length of bookshelf = x + 3

The width of bookshelf = x

The space between every two bookshelves = 3 ft

So, the length of bookshelf space = 6 * x + 5 * 3 = 6x + 15

The width of bookshelf space = 2* ( x+ 3 ) + 2 = 2x + 8

The total area of bookshelf space = (6x + 15) * ( 2x + 8 )

The area of additional seating = total area - area of bookshelves =

\begin{gathered} (6x+15)(2x+8)-(6x)(2x+8) \\ =(2x+8)\cdot(6x+15-6x) \\ =15(2x+8) \end{gathered}

So, the answer will be The area of additional seating = 15(2x+8)
