The United States entered the war because of the Germans' decision to resume the policy of unrestricted submarine warfare, and the so-called "Zimmerman telegram," intercepted by the British, in which Germany floated the idea of an alliance with Mexico.

The US did not enter world war 1, because they believed that what happened in Europe stays in Europe, and although most people wanted to become part of the Allied Powers, there were some immigrants from the Central Power that wanted the US to be part of the Central Power. And so they stayed neutral until they had a real reason to join the war

hope this helps
