Both Mahavira and Buddha showed similarities in that both were born into royal families, but they rejected this lifestyle by practicing of extreme asceticism. Often used for religious reasons or to reach a spiritual state, those who practice asceticism employ self-discipline by abstaining from all forms of indulgences. In doing so, they often adopt a frugal lifestyle.
