What effect did the growth of european imperialism have on united states attitudes toward foreign policy and expansion?

Americans became more urgent about the need for expansion. The idea that "with more land comes more power" was a common one during this time, and with the imperialist leanings of European countries, the feeling was that the US could not truly be a great nation if other countries gobbled up all the land before we could.
