Russification is a term which describes the manner through which non-Russian communities were forced to give up their cultural characteristics and to adopt the Russian ones. It comprised both official and unofficial policies that ocurred both during the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union era.

Such approach based on imposition triggered rebellion feelings among those subjected communities that did not have a say and had to abandon their beliefs and cultural manifestations to adopt foreign ones.
