The Thalamus is the region where complex visual stimuli are distinguished and interpreted. It performs several functions, including relaying sensory signals to the cerebral cortex. The thalamus also regulates consciousness and sleep. Essentially is it a relay station for the brain - being in the center it is able to relay information between different regions of the brain.
