Remember that the altitude of a triangle is the length of a segment which is perpendicular to the side opposed to a vertex and that passes through the vertex.

On the diagram, we can se that the segment AD is perpendicular to BC and passes through the point A. Therefore, AD is an altitude of the triangle.
