Marbury, in his suit against Secretary of State Madison, was wanting to receive his commission as a newly-appointed Justice of the Peace. Since Thomas Jefferson had just taken office as President at the time, he felt that these new appointments, since they didn't receive said commissions on time, were void. The Court found that Marbury had the right to his commission, but Madison could not be forced to deliver it to him.
