To determine the relationship between the data points, we need to begin by graphing them as points on a coordinate plane.

For this graph, the x-axis represents the hand width in centimeters, and the hand length is shown along the y-axis.

From what we can see in the graph for Part 1, we initially see that there is not a relationship between the width of the hand and the length of the hand.

Next, we need to create a table for the data. We can use the same table used in the question, but we should change the variables to x and y:

Now we need to find a model to fit the data. This can be done in both a calculator and other graphing calculator software.

Using a tool like that, we get the following equation:


y=0.12x+15.06

Now that we have a graph, we can see there is a slight (but weak) positive correlation between the width of a hand and the length of a hand.

Part Three:

Based on the graph and the equation, the model is not very accurate. There are several points that are not close to the line of best fit, and it's not likely we can use this model to make accurate estimates for hand width and length.

The results make sense, because hands can have very wide palms and short fingers, or very long fingers and narrow palms.

In real life, we would need to collect much more data and adjust the formula to determine if there is truly a positive correlation between hand width and hand length.
