A neutral atom is... well, an atom. An ion is an atom that is either positively or negatively charged. In other words, an ion with numbers of protons and electrons that are not equal to each other are ions.

Neutral atoms become ions when they bond with another atom or share an electron, changing their number of protons or electrons.

Hope this helps you.

Ions are electrically charged particles formed when atomslose or gain electrons. ... Metal atoms lose the electron, or electrons, in their highest energy level andbecome positively chargedions. Non-metal atoms gain an electron, or electrons, from another atom to becomenegatively charged ions.
