Mei bought a magazine and some notepads for $46

A magazine cost $6

A notepad cost $5

Let n represents number of notepads bought

The expression to relate the sum of a magazine and "n" number of notepads bought is given below as,

\begin{gathered} \text{Cost of a magazine+Cost of }n\text{ notepads=\$46} \\ \text{\$6+n(\$5)=\$46} \end{gathered}

Solving to find the value of n,

\begin{gathered} 6+5n=46 \\ \text{Collect like terms} \\ 5n=46-6 \\ 5n=40 \\ \text{Divide both sides by 5} \\ (5n)/(5)=(40)/(5) \\ n=8 \end{gathered}

Hence, she bought 8 notepads
