Mecca was an important trade and spiritual center of Arabian Peninsula, where the famous sanctuary Kaaba was built. Muhammad who was born in Mecca started preaching new religion there, but was opposed by the local leaders, who were afraid of his influence.

Eventually, Muhammad had to run away from Mecca, but he returned triumphally to the city, which became a sacred city for Muslims, while Kaaba became a sanctuary for only true God - Allah.
