A swimming pool has to be drained for maintenance. The pool is shaped like a cylinder with a diameter of 9 m and a depth of 1.3 m. Suppose water is pumped out of the pool at a rate of 14 m'³ per hour. If the pool starts completely full, how many hours will it take to empty the pool? Use the value 3.14 for a, and round your answer to the nearest hour. Do not round any intermediate computations.

First of all, calculate the volume of the swimming pool by using the following formula:

V = π r·h

h: height = 1.3 m

r: radius of the base = 9 m/2 = 4.5 m

replace the previous values into the formula for V:

V = (3.14)(4.5 m)(1.3 m)

V = 18.37 m³

Next, calculate the quotient:

18.37 m³/(14 m³/h) = 1.31 h

Hence, 1.31 hours are required to empty the swimming pool
