As you want to solve for y, you need to separate y-term in one side and the other terms in the other side

3- 5y = -37

3-3-5y = -37-3

-5 y = -40

y = 8

Done

I hope that helps!

y = 8

Subtract 3 over to the other side so you now have -5y = -40
Then divide both sides by -5 so you now have y = 8
