How is this stratified squamous epithelium different from that observed in the esophagus?

In esophagus the stratified squamos epithelium acts for protection and lubrication during food intake. It is structured to act like a mucous layer. Normal stratified squamos epithelium are of flattened epithelial cells upon a basl membrane. It provides protection against friction, microbial invasion etc.
