Why did the homestead act prompt a lot of people to head western

They would offer free land to the people who came to the west

The Homestead Act encouraged a lot of people to head western because it granted a person 160 acres of land for free as long as they live there for 5 years. On top of the 160 acres, they could buy more acres of land if they want extremely cheaply
