SOLUTIONS

Write the equation using function notation.

\begin{gathered} x_1,y_1=(3,13.7) \\ x_2,y_2=(-6,-34) \end{gathered}

Step 1: solve for the slope

m=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)=(-34-13.7)/(-6-3)=(-47.7)/(-9)=5.3

Step 2: Then use the equation of two points to write the equation

at points

x_2,y_2=(-6\text{ ,-34\rparen}

\begin{gathered} y-y_2=m(x-x_2) \\ y--34=5.3(x--6) \\ y+34=5.3(x+6) \\ y+34=5.3x+31.8 \\ y=5.3x+31.8-34 \\ y=5.3x-2.2 \end{gathered}

Therefore the equation of the function is

y=5.3x-2.2
