We can get this by the process of elimination. Start with A. "describe the atmosphere Mr. Home’s presence creates in the room" Well the three words are "swan," "trembled," and "glittered," I don't think Mr. Home wanted you to "swam" or "tremble at his house. So we'll eliminate this one

On choice B, "reveal that Paulina has become upset by what she has seen." When someone is upset they usually use very strong words like "disappointed" "let down" etc. Non of these words were used so we are going to eliminate this one.

For choice C "emphasize Paulina’s excitement at what she has seen." Now this one is possible. He stomach could have "swam" from excitement, the room could have "glittered" before her. But this isn't what it's talking about, lets go on.

Choice D,
"characterize the effect Paulina’s boredom has had on her appearance." now this one is looking right. The words and what she is describing is about how boredom effected what she was looking at. So the correct answer is D.
