Think of prime number that can divide into 42 evenly. The numbers 2 , 3 and 7 would work. I would use the highest number so there would be less work. Now start dividing 42 by 7

42 / 7 = 6
Now think of another high prime number you can divide into 6 evenly, which would be 3. 2 would work but 3 is better

6 / 3 = 2

So your prime factors are
2, 3, 7

We know this is correct because if we times 2 * 3 * 7 = 42
