5% as a decimal is .05

a.

Could Wang use any of the following methods to calculate his new hourly pay rate?

Choose Yes or No for each method.

Multiply 20 by 0.05 and add this result to 20.

20 * .05 = increase = 1

Add this to the original amount

20+1 = 21

yes this works

b. Add 5 to his original pay.

No 5 dollars is not the increase, 5% is the increase

c. Calculate 5% of 2.

No that would be 10cent and would not give use the new hourly rate

d. Multiply his original pay by 1.05.

the original rate is 100% add the percent increase 5% = 105%

change to decimal form

1.05

We can multiply the pay rate by 1.05

yes

e. x/20 = 105/100

This is using proportions

new rate divided by old = new percent over old

This will work

What is wangs new hourly rate

Multiply 20 by 0.05 and add this result to 20.

20 * .05 = increase = 1

Add this to the original amount

20+1 = 21

21 dollars is the new hourly rate
