The highest temperature is: 40°F

The lowest temperature is: -5°F

In order to find the change in temperature, we need to substract the lowest temperature, from the highest temperature:

\text{change}=\text{highest}-\text{lowest}

We substitute our values:

\text{change}=40-(-5)

Since -(-5) becomes +5:

\begin{gathered} \text{change}=40+5 \\ \text{change}=45 \end{gathered}

Answer: the temperature changed by 45°F
