The diagram below shows a circular pizza with a diameter of 10 inches. The pizza is in a square box with side lengths of 12 inches. In square inches, how much of the box is empty?

Use π = 3.14 and round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Answer: 65.5 inches of the box is empty.

Explanation:

Given : Diamter of circular pizza =10 inches

Then, radius =
(10)/(2) = 5\text{ inches}

Area of circle =
\pi r^2

Area of pizza =
3.14*(5)^2=78.5\ sq. inches.

Side of square = 12 inches

Area of square = side x side.

Area of square = 12 x 12 = 144sq. inches.

Area of box empty = Area of square - Area of pizza

= 144-78.5 sq. inches

= 65.5 inches

Hence, 65.5 inches of the box is empty.
