We can express the scale 1/3:4 with the ratio:

(4)/((1)/(3))

We can simplify this ratio like this:

(4)/((1)/(3))=(4*3)/(1)=12

And if we want to scale the width of the drawing from 6 inches, we just have to multiply 6 by the ratio, like this:

12*6=72

Then, the width of the painting is 72
